Ashley Robinson won two medals for Ireland at the Six Nations International Schools Championships in Cardiff last weekend. Robinson played his best table tennis ever winning an incredible twenty-three matches out of twenty-four against top international opposition from England, Scotland, Wales, Guernsey and Isle of Man.
In the cadet boys team event Ashley and Declan O'Brien from Cork claimed the gold medal for Ireland. Against each team they played two singles each and a doubles. In the doubles they were unstoppable combination winning all their matches especially winning 11/2, 11/4, 11/7 in the final against the English. In the singles of the team event Robinson really turned on the style beating Scottish number 1 Liam O'Shaunessy 11/2, 11/5, 11/7. Ashleys critical victory came against English number 1 Sam Walker in a thrilling five setter coming from 2 down to win, which along with their doubles victory denied England the gold medal.
This is the first time ever that Ireland have won the gold in the cadet boys event thanks mainly to the incredible performance of the Clogher player. Indeed it was the only gold Ireland won all weekend and the only gold conceded by England.
In the individual event Ashley was again in tremendous form getting to the final. This time Sam Walker won a very tight match denying Ashley double gold.
There was more good news for Ashley when word filtered through that he had been selected for the Iirsh Cadet Boys team for the European Championships.
