Caution urged in club ticket scam

BY ALAN RODGERS

A TYRONE GAA club has been hit by what is believed to be the first case of bogus ticket sellers in Ulster.

Recent years have seen the Strabane Sigersons club raise thousands for various developments, including the erection of new clubrooms and a second pitch. But they have absolutely nothing to do with tickets currently circulating and bearing the club's name and logo.

It is believed that sellers have targeted particular townlands in the Ballygawley area with the tickets during the past few weeks. Serious concerns about the issue have prompted the Sigersons club to issue a strong disclaimer.

"The tickets bearing the club logo were being sold at £20.00 each or three for £50.00 with a prize fund of £25,000 for a draw to be held on 29th November 2008," said club secretary and well-known Tyrone official, Aodhan Harkin.

"The club have received a copy of one of the tickets purchased and wish to point out that Strabane Sigersons G.A.A. do not have a draw ongoing at present.

"We would urge anyone approached to refuse to purchase such, unfortunately it appears that some people have already been conned into doing so.

"The club has spoken to the Tyrone County Board, our club solicitor and to the PSNI in Strabane regarding the matter and are appealing to everyone to spread the word that this is a bogus draw," he added.

The club wants anyone with information on the matter to contact the club without delay.

The concern for both them and others involving in fundraising activities will be that the actions of the ticket sellers would adversely affect others genuinely organising development draws throughout Ulster.

In recent weeks both the Errigal Ciaran and Carrickmore clubs in Tyrone have concluded major draws.
