STRABANE'S oldest brass band, St Joseph's, has started its programme for its 60th birthday celebrations by introducing, for the first time, the sounds of a brass band to Strabane's new Alley Theatre, when it took part in the recent 'Traditions Meet' concert.
Under the baton of Musical Director, Noel Barr Jnr, the band played a varied and interesting programme, including the beautiful 'Irish Blessing' and 'For Your Eyes Only' from the James Bond movie of the same name.
The band concluded its programme by playing 'Highland Cathedral' and 'Amazing Grace' with the pipes and drums of Bready Ulster Scots.
St Joseph's Chairman, Tommy Barr, said, "It was a wonderful occasion, and a privilege for St Joseph's to play to a capacity audience in this new theatre.
"We got a great reception from a very responsive and appreciative audience.
"The acoustics in the Alley are superb and I congratulate Strabane District Council on its vision to bring such a facility to the town."
On Sunday, 24th June, the band will take part in the annual remembrance service for the Association of Irish Ex-Servicemen and Women at St Patrick's Church in Lifford.
The following Saturday, 30th June, will see the band taking part in the annual Strabane Fair Day parade.
As part of the 'Removing Barriers to Rural Development' project, run by the Tyrone Donegal Partnership, the young brass players of the band, already taking part in a number of workshops, will participate with other young musicians in a residential weekend in August and perform at a number of concerts.
The band has organised a number of events for this important year and details will be publicised nearer each event.
