Motive Investigated

AS a motive for the murder of Strabane man, Brian McGlynn, continues to be investigated, his father told of the harrowing task of identifying his son.

Errol McGlynn said his son was practically unrecognisable and was identified by his eyes because of the horrific injuries he sustained when he was shot in cold blood.

The 28 year old doorman was shot dead as he slept in bed alongside his 24 year old girlfriend at his Derry home on Sunday night.

Two gunmen smashed their way into the home the couple shared in the Fountain Hill area of the city, before shooting the victim.

They are believed to have escaped across Craigavon Bridge in a green Vauxhall Cavalier.

The Strabane father said identifying a son is the most difficult thing he has ever had to do in his life.

"To see him the way I saw him on Monday, the way he was looking. You would not have recognised him," said Mr McGlynn.

Detectives investigating the murder said yesterday (Wed) that they continue to investigate a motive for the cold blooded killing of the doorman.

The PSNI has described the murder as a 'well executed' and 'well orchestrated' killing. Police are said to be looking at the theory that a professional hitman was hired.

Chief Inspector Jeff Smyth said, "We are keeping an open mind in terms of the motive for this murder. It has all the hallmarks of a well-executed and well-orchestrated killing.

"We are trying to establish if it was paramilitary or criminal related, or if he was murdered because of the nature of his job."

Chief Superintendent Richard Russell has said that there are several strong lines of inquiry.

He said that a large amount of forensic test results will become available to his officers in the coming days.

"One of the theories we are working on is that because of the inevitable tensions in Mr McGlynn's job as a doorman, someone was sufficiently annoyed with him to consider murdering him," he said.

Mr McGlynn's father said his son had never given any indication that he feared for his life.

Acknowledging his son had previously been involved in crime, he said, "This last five years he had settled down and stopped all the misbehaving. This is the worst shock I have ever had."

Mr McGlynn was known to police and had a number of convictions for public order offences and assaults.

According to a reliable source he had not come to the attention of the courts for over four years. He had been employed by a security firm in Derry city until two weeks ago and was described by his former boss as an "exceptional" employee.

Five men have been questioned by police about the shooting. They were all subsequently released without charge.

Mr McGlynn was shot dead in front of his girlfriend, Jennifer Cowley. Although his girlfriend was not injured in the attack, she was later treated for shock at Altnagelvin Hospital.

The Chief Inspector said, "His girlfriend should, at such a young age, not have had to witness this brutal killing and I am determined to bring Mr McGlynn's killers to justice. My sympathy goes out to her and to Mr McGlynn's family."
