I have heard that the Roads Service is considering putting ramps on Urney Road at Castletown West and on Castletown Road to make drivers slow down approaching the 'hubcap' roundabout.
I do not known what views the emergency services, such as ambulances or the fire brigade, have about these ramps but they are a real nuisance to ordinary drivers and any passengers, especially the elderly or people with medical devices.
The roundabout at Urney Road/Castletown Road is a dangerous and frightening traffic management system, largely because there is only a single dinner-plate sized warning sign stuck high up a pole, well above the sight of a driver on dipped headlights in the dark.
For some reason, the DOE accepts this as an adequate standard traffic warning device but the approach to a roundabout should be marked on the road surface itself with a proper braking surface laid down.
There should also be some reflector system on the roundabout.
If there is a problem of excessive speed and dangerous driving in the Castletown area, this should be a matter for the police to caution the drivers concerned. There is no excuse for turning the area into another no-go area like Ballycolman.
Very few mortorists would be in favour of ramps at Castletown as a solution to traffic problems in the area. The ramps are also a difficulty for lorries and commercial vehicles. If they were a temporary measure, for two or three months, people might put up with them but as a permanent feature of our roads they are even more daft than the potholes on Donegal's roads.
Ramps were recently installed at Clady and God help any stranger encountering them. They were very poorly marked. There was no adequate advance warning. Clady needs a by-pass down through the meadows, not a bone-shaker installation like ramps.
