Plumbridge welcomes Sure Start

Strabane Sure Starts expansion came into fruition when it officially opened its new centre in Plumbridge on Friday September 14. The much awaited event was well attended by parents and children from the local area.

The children had the opportunity to play in the new centre which will be open to parents with children under four years in the Plumbridge and Cranagh electoral ward. A 'Stay and Play' session will operate every Tuesday and Wednesday in the centre from 10-11.30am.

As part of this, Speech and Language Therapist, Breege Gormley will be available on Wednesdays to run a Rhyme Time Session and provide general advice to parents on speech and language development.

A mobile creche will also be available. Initially places will be reserved for children whose parents are attending courses. Sharon Hasson, Project Development Officer for Sure Start commented that she was delighted with the turn out on Friday and is looking forward to beginning a six week Cook It programme which is fully subscribed already.

A five week Baby Massage course suitable for babies under nine months is also on offer which commenced on Thursday September 20 from 10.30-11.30am. There are still some places available on the course and creche facilities are available.

Services have been running successfully in Strabane Sure Start for the past six years and staff are looking forward to the opportunity of meeting new parents and children and adapting services to meet the needs of a rural community.

Liz Kavanagh Manager of Sure Start welcomes this expansion and is delighted to be able to offer these services in this idyllic setting. She would encourage parents to come along and avail of the play opportunities and training programmes that will be available in the future. These will include baby yoga, home safety, etc. She is aware that accessing services in a rural setting is now alwawys easy and is keen to hear fromparents in this position. If this is the case for you please contact Danny Fox at Sure Start so that we can work in partnership towards a solution.
