Derg man's band to feature in Harp advert

The Jane Bradfords, a band formed by Castlederg man Declan Gallen, have been launched onto a national and international stage after their music was chosen to feature in the latest Harp advert.

The nationwide TV, Internet and Cinema ad campaign uses an instrumental of the song 'Ninety Nine' off the Belfast based Jane Bradfords debut album.

The advert is a stop frame-animation featuring grafitti that comes alive and runs amok around some familiar Belfast landmarks.

The band are thrilled that their song was chosen for the advert.

Declan said 'kudos' has to be given to Harp Lager for keeping their ear to the ground with regards to Northern Irish music.

"There are loads of great bands out there that deserve the exposure that an advert can give you. Too many other companies completely overlook the music in their own backyard in favour of high profile bands who don't really need neither the exposure or the money," he said.

A former pupil at St Eugene's High School, Castlederg, and The Christian Brothers, Omagh, Declan formed the band in 2006 with friends from Belfast.

He has also become renowned as a popular DJ in Belfast and holds weekly residencies in The Stiff Kitten and Mandela Hall.

Declan has recently started a facebook campaign to put pressure on TV stations and advertisers to feature more homegrown talent in their programming.

He said, "There really is no excuse why the BBC and UTV cannot play more Northern Irish music on locally made tv shows.

"In the English coverage of Children in Need last year I heard at least four Northern Irish bands played in the background yet the Northern Irish coverage featured none.

"It's pretty shameful that they don't try harder to help their local music scene."

He went on to praise Northern Irish radio shows like Across the Line and Radio 1 NI for their passion for local music and said that 'others could learn a lot from their brilliant example.'

The Jane Bradfords are currently finishing off their second album and hope to have it out before summer.

You can download the song 'Ninety-Nine' by the Jane Bradfords from itunes or listen to it at www.myspace.com/thejanebradfords.
