People in the Diocese of Derry have been thanked for their generous support to the Missions with the announcement that they contributed ¤164,886 during Mission Sunday 2006.
Mission Sunday is a day set aside each year for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church's missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice.
Last year Mission Sunday took place on October 22. Since the year 2000, the people of the Diocese have donated ¤1.1 million to the missions and missionaries around the world.
Diocesan Director of the Propagation of the Faith, Fr Seán McKenna, said, "The funds donated during Mission Sunday are sent in their entirety to support vital projects such as the building of schools, churches and orphanages, educate seminarians and respond to the spiritual needs of parishioners. No administrative cost is taken from the donations received."
The 2007 Mission Sunday collection will be taken up countrywide on October 21.
