STRABANE Council recently hosted a reception for local teenager Megan Adair, to acknowledge her receipt of a Carers Certificate of Merit award for her dedication to the care of her sister who suffers from Attention Deficiency Disorder.
Megan (15) looked after and helped with the care of her older sister Carley (17) while she lived at home.
She was nominated for the William Keown Trust award by her teacher, Caroline Donnelly in Loretto Grammar School in Omagh.
Speaking of her daughter, Mairead Adair said, "Megan is a very caring person, and she carries that outside as well. Even at primary school in St Mary's she was always helping other people.
"Megan helped out at home a lot, and was always there in the background for her whenever she needed help. She helped her with everyday things and was just there to help and support Carley all the time."
Mairead admitted that it has been far from easy for Megan given her sister's problems. But she says that her daughter overcame all difficulties in front of her and that, despite her young age, is a very mature person with an overwhelming kindness towards others.
"We always felt she needed to grow up fast because of the things going on around her. It was tough on her, especially as her sisters condition made her physically violent on occasions.
"But she never let it bother her and just got on with things. She just took it all in her stride."
The Council reception hosted by Gerard Foley was an unexpected but welcome boost for the family who were grateful to the council for their gesture.
"We've very proud of Megan and it's nice to see her getting recognised, it was a bit of a surprise to get the award in the first place and also for it to be recognised by the council.
"She got a really nice piece of crystal and Megan was really happy, it was a great boost to her," said the proud mum.
