Cross-border approach to poor roads network is established

THE CHAIRMAN of Strabane District Council has said a cross border meeting on the state of roads was 'very constructive'.

Sinn Féin's Gerard Foley was speaking after the meeting yesterday with his Donegal counterparts, JJ Reid and Paddy McGowan.

The local authority's Chairman arranged a meeting between councillors and Roads Service officials from Strabane and Donegal so that a joint approach can be established in tackling the poor state of the cross-border roads network between both areas.

Particular emphasis is being placed on the , and particularly between the Derg and Stranorlar Electoral areas.

Cllr Foley said, "Many of the roads along the Strabane/Donegal Border were blocked off by the British Military for more than thirty years. While they have now all been re-opened there has been a continuation of the neglect of all of the roads in this area right up to the present day.

"Improvements that have been carried out have been of a piecemeal nature and have not been co-ordinated on both sides of the border.

"Along with Cllr Charlie Mc Hugh and Cllr Kieran Mc Guire, my Sinn Féin colleagues in the Derg Electoral Area, we have identified issues in relation to 17 cross border roads which range from the need for long over-due upgrades to resurfacing; through to the absence and lack of signage.

"We are pressing for a joined up approach to be established so that the neglect of the roads network along the Strabane/Donegal border can at last begin to be addressed."

Following yesterday's meeting it was agreed that the delegation would again meet in September, this time in Donegal.
