LAST week saw the introduction of the smoking ban in all enclosed public areas across Strabane, Tyrone and the wider Six Counties.
Many feared that with the introduction of the smoking ban socializing would no longer be as enjoyable. However, iith the glorious weather last week it appeared to many local businesses that trade would prosper instead decline.
In general, local publicans do not feel that the ban will stop local customers from enjoying a night out. Gerard McGill propieter of Felix's Bar this week said, "Currently there has been no problem, people are accepting the ban very well. At the minute there does not seem to be any decline in business, I have gained a few customers as parents would not have brought young childern into the bar during the day. The ban appears to be having a positive effect."
Adian Kennedy, from Christy's Bar, which is currently undergoing renovations commented, "None of our customers have found any problem with the ban, buisness shold not be affected. With the ban those who want to smoke can take advantage of our beer garden."
It does seem that many of the businesses in the town were well-equipped for the ban and that many are following the rules of the leglisation. The ban has only just come into force and the public appear to be co-operating with no resistance.
The Farmer's Home also has the convienence of having a large area outside the back to accomodate the smokers. John Gillesphie who currently manages the bar said, "The first week of the ban has been a total sucess, there has been no problem at all. I think business will prosper as many of those who did not go out now have no problem heading out for a drink. Some customers do not like the idea of standing outside to smoke, our amenties allows them to stand outside."
