Donemana hold out for victory

NORTH WEST SENIOR ONE

DONEMANA were given a scare by Eglinton, but held their nerve to record a 21 run win. The Tyrone side ran up 263 for 5 in their 50 overs, with Richard Kee top scoring with 77, which contained 10 fours.

He added 111 for the second wicket with Azhar Shafiq, who made 61 off 72 balls, and also hit 10 boundaries.

Junior McBrine batted well for his 36, while his brother James, made a typically fast unbeaten 30. All of the Eglinton attack suffered with the exception of Johnny Gardiner who took 1-29 off 7 overs.

Richard Wylie went on the offensive to race to his half century off just 39 deliveries, and kept the momentum going with a hard hit 103. He batted for just 89 balls, and hit 12 boundaries. His dismissal at 195 for 4 proved to be the turning point of the game.

He had just declined the offer of light, and from then on Donemana assumed control. Andy Christie fell without scoring in the same over, both victims of Donemana skipper Mc Gonigle. Overseas student Zeesha Termisi impressed with 30, wile Christopher Pierce batted well as he and Wylie added 75 for the 4th wicket. Dwayne Mc Gerrigle in a rare bowl, did well to capture 3-22, while Mc Gonigle finished with 3-43, as his side ran out 21 run winners.

Fox Lodge won again to leave Glendermott pointless after the opening two rounds of games. The Rectory side scored just 168 on the compact Ballymagorry ground, which was nowhere near competitive. That they got that many was down to one individual - opener Thomas Riddles hit 85 - 11 fours and 2 sixes - but the only other batsmen to reach double figures were skipper Johnny Thompson, (15), and wicket-keeper Maurice Ferguson, (10), in a poor batting display. It was a day for former Glendermott players to show them what they were missing - professional Pravanjan Mullick with 3-22, Gary Neely 2-30, and Mark Mooney 2-19 doing the majority of the damage.

Bad light forced an early stop to the Limavady versus Bready fixture. The home side were well placed after an opening stand of 137 between Des Curry (67), and Ian Mc Gregor (69).

They were both out before the close of play though, as Limavady finished on 175 for 2 after 35 overs. Limavady gained their first points of the season with a relatively comfortable 6 wicket win at home to Bready. Needing 79 runs to win when play resumed, they lost the early wicket of Mark Mc Daid for 28, caught by Black off Ian Young.

The same bowler clean bowled Andrew Riddles for 23, but that was to the end of the Bready success for the evening. Former Irish internationals Richard Mc Daid and David Cooke steered Limavady home with 15 balls to spare.

Cooke hit two boundaries in his 30 not out from 29 balls, while Mc Daid (25 not out), hit 3 fours and a towering six to complete the victory.

Earlier South African professional Frikkie Holtzhausen had made 102 off just 98 balls in the Bready total of 253 for 9. He hit 8 fours and 3 sixes in a chanceless knock. He was given good support by Ireland U19 star Chris Dougherty who struck 8 boundaries in a fine 53. Neels Englebreecht with 3-51, and Richard Mc Daid 2-30, were best with the ball for the Roesiders.

NORTH WEST SENIOR TWO

Drummond even without the services of their overseas professional have began the season in fine style. They travelled over the border to face St Johnston on Saturday, and came away with the points by a comprehensive 7 wicket margin. The Saints will have been bitterly disappointed with their total of just 95. Only three players reached double figures - David Barnard (30), Alan MacBeth (17), and number ten, Aravind Reddy (17*). Wasim Mohammed and Gregory Mc Daid both took 3 wickets, while Carlin and Corscadden were also successful.

That proved to be no trouble for Drummond, as they lost just the three wickets in passing the total in the 19th over. Stevie Moore top scored with an unbeaten 36, while there were double figure contributions from Mc Daid, Wilson and Mohammed. David Barnard picked up two wickets for the Saints in their losing cause.

Sion Mills held the advantage over Ardmore when bad light stopped play on Saturday night. Sion made an above par score of 224 thanks mainly to the efforts of veteran left hander Raymond Moan. He rolled back the years with a well manufactured 63. The Ardmore attack, minus Brian and Lee Brolly looked very ordinary, and weren't helped by an injury to Gerry Mc Auley. Johnny Mc Crea (44), and Raymond Quinn (26), were the other main run getters. A new slimline Dessie Mc Court bowled well, taking 4-46, while Ciaran Curley, 3-54, was also among the wickets.

Lee Mc Gonigle was his usual miserly self, taking 2-13 off his 10 over spell as Ardmore batted. Paul Brolly (48), made the most of a number of reprieves, while Thomas Brolly (30) batted well. Sion edged out Ardmore in a thrilling contest. Needing 106 from 20 overs when play resumed on Tuesday night, Ardmore lost the wickets of Gerard Brolly and Damien Gallagher in identical fashion, caught by Lucas off Darren Moan, both for 13. Skipper George Brolly was run out for 7, but while Gerard Mc Auley remained at the crease, any result was still possible. He made 41 before being bowled by Mc Crea in the final over. Mark Chambers hit the last ball of the game for six to end unbeaten on 15, but it was too little too late for the Bleachgreen side, who finished on 220 for 9.

Burndennett won on their travels at Coleraine, chasing 154 successfully. Stephen Mc Cartney top scored for the home side with a fluent 40, and Geoffrey Lockhart batted well for his 30. Stephen Mc Cay's great start to the season continued, as he captured 4-35, while Aidan Boyle would have been pleased with his spell of 2-10 in 8 overs.

McCay smashed a boundary laden half century, and Garwin Pollock his opening partner made an assured 22. Philip Kelly with an undefeated 36 saw Burndennett over the finishing line, after they lost their usually free scoring midle order of Mark Roulston and Aidan Boyle, for a combined total of just 3. He was helped ny Mark Doherty, who scored 23. Nigel Barr, 3-17, and Rodney Lockhart, 2-27 were the bowlers of note for Coleraine.

Sunday's action wasn't as successful for Burndennett, as they went down by 18 runs to St Johnston in a high scoring encounter. The free scoring Alan MacBeth hit a magnificent 95, and skipper James Robinson weighed in with an unbeaten 53 from number ten. That helped his side to 236, which was always going to be tricky for Burndennett. Mc Cay (3-18), and Roulston, (3-35) were the main wicket takers.

Mc Cay (35), and Kelly (33) were again among the runs, but Andrew Fleming with 4 wickets tore through the middle order to leave the home side in disarray. Mark Porter smashed 4 sixes in his 56 to offer some hope, but in the end they fell 18 runs short, to put a dent in their promotion aspirations. Renee Cole (2-32), and Ian Mc Beth (2-22), bowled well.

Sion Mills overcame a poor Fermanagh side on Sunday beating them by 7 wickets. Lionel Semple with 15 top scored for the Kesh outfit, as they managed just 63 all out. Giles Moan (3-17), and Lee Mc Gonigle (3-20), inflicted the majority of the damage. S Mc Gee scored an unbeaten 24. Ian Wilson with 2-18 did his best in a losing cause.
