Good news for Strabane

STRABANE 2000 has received confirmation that its application to Sustrans Connect2 programme for the 'Strabane – Crossing the River Mourne' project, which focused on the bridge from Meeting House Street to the Melvin Park Sports Complex is included in the final list of 79 schemes, which together comprise the Connect2 project submitted to the Big Lottery Fund.

Heather Torrens, Project Manager, said, "Over the next eight months or so I will continue to progress the Strabane project as well as securing a large circle of supporters in order to win the vote.

"Various public relations events will take place in order highlight this project as support is vital to the success of Sustrans' bid, therefore the backing of the community is critical."

Connect2 is one of the projects hoping to compete for a single multi-million pound grant from the Big Lottery Fund's Living Landmarks: The People's Millions competition. The winner will be decided by public TV vote in December on ITV1.

Sustrans is working with partners around the UK to overcome long-standing barriers such as busy roads, railways or rivers that are dividing communities and making it difficult for people to travel by foot or bike as part of their everyday lives.

Heather concluded, "I wish to take this opportunity to thank all those who supported this project so far and ask for your continued assistance to help Sustrans win its bid, thus ensuring funding for the Strabane bridge project."
