Clann na nGael extend unbeaten run with victory in League Cup

Clann na nGael....1-13

Moortown..........0-12

Clann na nGael's unbeaten run this season continued at Greencastle on Friday evening when they lifted the Frank O'Neill cup when they got the better of a dogged Moortown side that played right to the final whistle.

With thirteen minutes left to play the sides were on level terms but during those closing stages the winners outscored their opponents six points to two to keep them on course for a possible clean sweep in Intermediate football this season.

Cathal McGill, Noel McDermott, Brendan Conway, Sean O'Kane, Stephen O'Neill and Joe Ball all played well for Clann na nGael while Moortown were best served by Joe Tibet, Martin Crozier, Conal Lavery, Jarlath Hagan and Colum Campbell.

Clann na nGael were out of the traps quickly and a strong run from Stephen O'Neill saw him lay the ball off for Adrian Ball to open the scoring after four minutes.

Sixty seconds later O'Neill turned finisher himself after a neat turn and it looked as though Clann na nGael were going to have it all their own way but Moortown fought back with efforts from Colum Campbell and Dwaine McVey to be on level terms by the end of the opening quarter.

The Moortown defence were starting to get to grips with their opponents attack while at the other end of the field the St.Malachys were turning possession into scores with Barry McGuigan and Padraig Hagan both weighing in with quality points for a 0-5 to 0-3 lead.

Joe Ball reduced the deficit to the minimum from a placed ball but Moortown were still looking the better side and a brilliant McVey point from the left wing was followed by an equally good score from Campbell as the Loughshore men greeted the half time whistle 0-7 to 0-4 in front.

The second half was three minutes old when Stephen O'Neill took a pass from Noel McDermott to open the scoring and moments later the former fisted the ball inside to Joe Ball who burst through and gave Moortown keeper Niall Conlon no chance with an explosive shot to the roof of the net.

The StMalachy's were stunned but their response was immediate with midfielder McGuigan hitting the equaliser from out on the right wing in the very next attack. Sean O'Kane and Noel McDermott kicked Clann na nGael points with Campbell and Donal Hagan replying for Moortown but it was then that Clann na nGael began to get on top.

Four points in as many minutes from Adrian Ball, O'Kane, O'Neill and midfielder Conway gave Clann na nGael the cushion that they needed and even though Moortown hit back through two Campbell points time wasn't on their side.

The Clann na nGael defence soaked up the Moortown pressure and they counter attacked for O'Neill and Joe Ball to score injury time points to ensure they took the honours.
