NEWBUILDINGS UTD .................1
STRABANE...............................0
NEWBUILDINGS edged out Strabane in this keenly fought League match played at Newbuildings last Saturday. But for a couple of good saves by the Village team's keeper, Strabane could have easily emerged as winners.
The first half was played at a good pace, with both sides having an even share of the play. Both sets of defenders were on their game, ensuring that clear cut chances were few and far between. Newbuildings did have a good effort midway through the half, but Strabane keeper Conroy pulled off a great save. Coyle and McDermott up front for Strabane had a few shots from far out, but the home goal was never really in danger, so at half time the score was 0-0.
The opening period of the second half was much like the first with the teams cancelling each other out. However, on 17 minutes, Newbuildings finally found the net.
Strabane were sparked into action after this score and proceeded to take the game to their opponents, forcing them on to the back foot.
During this period, the home keeper came to his team's rescue as he stopped whatever was fired at him, in particular, making a great save from Terence McCallion when a goal seemed certain. He followed this up with another great stop from a Gallagher shot.
Strabane tried very hard to grab an equaliser, but all credit to the Newbuilding's team as they held on to their slender lead to win this local derby.
The display by Strabane in the final twenty minutes of the game was very encouraging and on another day it would have been enough to win a game. But the lack of a rub of the green saw them go down by the odd goal for the second game in a row.
The Strabane club would like to thank Orchard Glass for kindly sponsoring the team for the game. It is much appreciated. Next Satuday Strabane will be in League action when they play Churchill Utd at Melvin Park with kick off at 2.30pm.
