Creative sparks were certainly flying at this year's Western Education and Library Board's (WELB) final of the Sentinus Science and Technology Challenge. Seventeen schools competed in this year's final to be crowned the 2007 champions.
The challenge was to 'design and make a gravity vehicle which will carry an egg safely whilst travelling down a ramp and over a bump'. As the vehicle moves over the bump a light should switch 'on' automatically! The pupils in teams of three were provided with a limited range of raw materials and were given one hour to complete the task.
Edwards PS scooped the top award this year and was presented with a camcorder. They will be joined by four other schools, including Donemana PS, to compete in the Seagate Young Innovators Final in the Odyssey Arena in June.
The Board's Advisory Officer for Science and Technology, Raymond Moffatt, said: "The pupils have displayed tremendous ingenuity and creativity during the competition and have solved the challenge through a range of innovative and imaginative solutions. All of the pupils have done extremely well."
in reaching the final of the competition."
He continued: "The technology challenge represents all that is best in primary education with opportunities for creativity, problem-solving, collaboration and the development of practical skills and the use of knowledge."
The competition was organised by the WELB and sponsored by Sentinus, Northgate, Coca Cola, Rocwell, Supervalu, Omagh, and Dunnes Stores, Omagh.
