Killyclogher take vital points to move level with Aghyaran

Tyrone's Martin Penrose goes flying over Down's Martin Cole. Picture Michael Cullen.

Killyclogher.......0-13

Aghyara...........2-5

This was a must win game for both sides in a proverbial four pointer at Ballinamullan and it was the home side who came out on top with a couple of points to spare to move level in the table with Aghyaran.

The St Davog's enjoyed a dream start to the contest with an early goal but Killyclogher fought back to be on level terms at the break although the home side had keeper Mark O'Kane to thank for a couple of fine first half saves. Killyclogher outscored the visitors 0-7 to 0-2 in the opening twenty five minutes of the second period but a second Aghyaran goal set up a thrilling finish with the St.Marys just about doing enough to hang on to secure a crucial victory.

The contest was less than a minute old when a quick free from Aidan Connolly went in behind the Killyclogher defence were Michael Anderson fielded the ball before turning to finish to the net past keeper Mark O'Kane. The St.Davogs failed to build on that though as they didn't score again for the next twenty six minutes although Anderson and Martin Penrose were both denied by O'Kane. A Damian Meenan free opened Killyclogher's account and they were level by the tenth minute after James Carlin and Conor Meenan had both split the posts from play. Leo Meenan andf then put the home side two in front but it was the visitors who had the final say of the opening period with Anthony Devine converting two frees to leave it all level at the break, 1-2 to 0-5.

Killyclogher were out of the blocks quickly in the second half with Damian Meenan knocking over a first minute free before Ciaran Clarke got on the end of a high ball in from the former to punch over the bar. Martin Penrose opened Aghyaran's second half account from a placed ball but a trio of unanswered points from James Carlin (2) and Simon O'Neill put the St Mary's into a strong position. Michael Anderson got a much needed Aghyaran score but the momentum was with the home side and after O'Neill and Leo Meenan both registered they led 0-12 to 1-4 with only 12 minutes left.

There didn't seem much danger when Aghyaran midfielder Anthony McGrath won possession but he advanced on goal before letting fly with an absolute screamer that rocketed to the back of the Killyclogher net to leave it game on again. However, a last minute point from O'Neill helped ease Killyclogher's nerves and they held on for a vital win.
