Regardless of what a minority of people think, painting post-boxes green will not erase the border. Anyone who has a problem with putting their post in a red post-box in the Strabane area can go across the border to somewhere like Lifford and use a green one.

Meanwhle, I have concerns about the people involved. It would appear that those members of the Republican/Nationalist community who are associated with this must have deeply embedded personal problems and issues that they need to address. I would have serious concerns for the mental health of a person who gets a thrill from painting post-boxes green – this fetish is unusual and quite worrying.

I would also say that regardless of how restricted the mental capacity of these people is, it is no excuse for wanton vandalism and I would call on the appropriate authorities to ensure that the group or persons responsible are held to account and pay the full cost for the repainting or replacement of each of the damaged and affected items.
