YOUNG people in Sion Mills were given a first hand demonstration of the dangers of fireworks and bonfires at the weekend.
Organised by the Sion Mills Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, around 80 people turned out at the local promary school for demonstrations by the Fire Service, Ambulance personnel and the PSNI.
Among issues addressed, the Fire Service and the Ambulance Service gave a thought provoking demonstration on how difficult daily activities such as tying your lace if a limb or eyesight was lost as a result of an accident with a firework.
Speaking after the event, Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator, Andy Patton said it was imperative that everyone stay safe this Halloween.
"The Co-ordinators of Sion Mills Neighbourhood Watch wants everyone to remain safe over the Halloween period.
"This includes elderly people who often feel afraid as bangers and fireworks are set off, or young people who may be injured using fireworks.
"Everyone has a role to play. People who attended this event were able to hear what they can do to ensure that everyone has a safe Halloween."
Mace, Spar, Mac's Store, Loughery's Shop and Sion Swifts provided spot prizes for the event
It was also supported by Strabane District Policing Partnership (DPP) and Strabane Community Safety Partnership (CSP).
"We would like to thank the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and the PSNI for taking the time to attend the event," added one of the event's organiser.
