RESIDENTS of Greeves Park this week denied a claim by private housing firm Habinteg that they are all in favour of the major refurbishment programme currently in progress at the estate.
Habinteg came under fire last week after a pensioner was left for a week without bathroom or kitchen facilities while his bungalow under went renovation.
Community Activist Paul Gallagher said that by not rehousing residents while the refurbishment programme was in progress, Habinteg were 'putting profit before people'.
Responding to Mr Gallagher's accusation, the firm said they had consulted with Greeves Park residents and received very positive feedback.
This claim was rubbished this week however, when more than 30 residents signed a petition calling for compensation for the cosmetic damage caused as a result of the refurbishment.
Residents said that while they are happy that standards of living will be improved with the installation of new kitchens, heating and windows, Habinteg should also be prepared to replace the paintwork and wallpaper in each home.
Backing the resident's campaign for compensation, Mr Gallagher said there is an obligation on the firm to financially accomodate residents.
"These properties are owned by Habinteg, so it is their obligation to keep them upgraded. The maintenance work being carried out is for the company's own benefit as it will lengthen the shelf life of the houses. But they are inconveniencing current tenants and must be prepared to compensate them for damage caused.
"Tenants are only being offered the choice of two colours of paint when redecorating. Habinteg should be prepared to restore all paint and paper to its original colour.
"Residents should also be compensated for any occasion where they have to travel to eat because of no electrical supply.
However, Habinteg has said that no financial recompense will be forthcoming, but add they will try and accomodate residents via other means.
"Habinteg are making a major investment in refurbishing homes at Greeves Park. The work will deliver greatly improved living spaces for residents and significantly reduce energy costs. The Association has an agreement with the contractors to make good the premises on completion of the work."
"Habinteg is willing to offer tenants as much choice as is possible within the terms of the contract for any necessary redecoration," said a spokesperson.
