A CLADY schoolgirl has been praised as a fantastic ambassador for he school.

10 year old Elena Byrne, a pupil at St Columba's Primary School, suffers from cystic fibrosis but she doesn't let that create any barriers in her life.

The year six student picked up the 'Junior Artistic award' at the 12th annual Breathing Life Awards in London.

The annual Breathing Life Awards showcase the talents of people with cystic fibrosis, Britain's most common life-threatening illness.

In front of a star studded audience, Elena was presented with her award by Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq and former Blue Peter presenter Janet Ellis, while her parents, Clare and Hugh, and brother Connor proudly watched.

Elena was nominated for the award by her babysitter.

The primary school student is currently studying for her 11 plus and also for her GCSE Spanish and among her past times are painting, golfing and playing the piano and tin whistle.

And in her spare time she raises money for charity and helps care for relatives.

Elena has raised £2000 in fundraising events at her school including quizzes, raffles and a Big Bounce.

On the night Elena met with celebrities including Mel C and Gareth Gates, David Seaman, Catherine Kelly, (Becky in Coronation Street).

Mrs Byrne said today: "It was absolutely fantastic. We didn't know she was going to win the award up until the last minute.

"There were four people nominated and it was just like the Oscars, when her name was announced it was fantastic.

Principal of St Columba's, Colette Maguire, said, "Elena is a fantastic ambassador for her school.

"Myself, the staff and pupils are very proud of her for achieving such a prestigious award."
