Glenelly take the title

A wet pitch, strong winds, a penalty miss and a four point half-time deficit still weren't enough to stop Glenelly capping their season with yet another remarkable comeback.

Inspired by solid second half performances from Ryan Finlay at full back, Darragh Bradley in midfield and a real captain's performance from Colm Hicks at centre half back, Glenelly minors came back from a number of setbacks to beat Stewartstown to take the Grade 3 League title.

"We leaked goals a crucial times, we struggled to handle their big full forward and we came in at half time and decided we'd change things about," said Glenelly manager Sean McConnell.

"Ryan Finlay went on to mark him and he settled things down.

"I said to them at half time, it was no good coming in at two o'clock saying they had played in a county final, they had to do more than that. They knuckled down, and I knew all along if we got to the last 10 minutes within touching distance, we would finish stronger."

The conditions were tough on both teams, but Glenelly seemed to make better use of the wind in the second half, a tactic McConnell said they were planning for,

"It was tough conditions out there, very sticky and very windy and we decided we would play against the wind in the first half and see if we could hold on

"We put Tim Harney and Ciaran McConnell to the edge of the square at the start of the second half and put ball into them, route one stuff, and it worked. We got 2-3 in that period.

"But we seemed to loose our way again and Stewartstown came back strongly and really dominated for the next 10 minutes.

"But I thought out defence, particularly our half back line knuckled down, worked hard and closed the game out."

However, McConnell admits that the Harps gave his side a tough game, "Stewartstown put us to the wing of our collar, they're a damned good side, and a bounce of the ball the wrong way could have left it anybody's game."

One of the crucial periods of the game was Colm Hicks' penalty miss in the first half, "The thing that helped me was that we missed one in the quarter final against Rock,"said the Glenelly skipper.

"We knew we weren't playing well at half time, but we got ourselves settled down and got back on level terms quickly in the second half. The subs came on and tightened things up at the back and Ryan Finlay was brilliant today, he gave it everything, as did all the players."
