VOLUNTEERS from the Derry City and Strabane and District council areas joined together in a special night of celebration at the Everglades Hotel last month.
The event was organised by North West Volunteer Centre as part of the International Day of Volunteering celebrations and was a perfect way to recognise and pay tribute to the time, effort and commitment displayed by volunteers throughout the area week in, week out.
A fantastic turnout on the evening together with splendid musical accompaniment provided by St Joseph's Brass Band and a delightful setting ensured that everyone present had a wonderful evening to remember. Local playwright and Director of SEEDS, Eddie Kerr kept the 200 strong crowd entertained and ensured the event was set up to be a relaxed, joyous and celebratory evening, highlighting the wonderful contribution volunteers make to communities.
In all, nine different award categories, as well as a special recognition award, were presented at the ceremony with local TV presenter and filmmaker Joe Mahon providing a "light hearted and debonair" touch to proceedings.
Whilst the event was an ideal opportunity to recognise local volunteers, it also demonstrated the power of community activity in breaking down barriers, rebuilding lives and tackling serious social issues that often go unnoticed.
Marirose Doherty, Volunteer Co-ordinator commented, "The evening has been a resounding success and is a wonderful show case for volunteering throughout the Strabane District Council area.
"It was great to see a so many of the Strabane community/voluntary organisations recognised at this event. The event demonstrates volunteers' commitment to tackling grass root problems and specific social needs whilst showing the great diversity of volunteering locally, not only through the many different activities but also through the many different ages and backgrounds represented here tonight."
Strabane Groups recognised on the night included; Help the Aged, The Koram Centre, Ballymagorry Community Development Association, Strabane Talking newspaper, The Good Morning Project, U3A Strabane, Royal British Legion and The Plum Club.
