A community group in Derry has received £108,000 from the Department for Social Development to help maintain a vital service for elderly people.
The Neighbourhood Renewal funding will enable the Galliagh Community Development Group to continue offering its much needed 'Good Morning North West' service which provides a daily call to elderly people in the Outer North and Cityside areas of Derry to check on their well-being.
Social Development Minister David Hanson MP welcomed the project saying, "The Good Morning North West service is vital as it enables elderly and vulnerable people living alone to enjoy both social contact and reassurance. It also provides them with information and advice on a wide range of issues including welfare rights, health care and housing repairs.
"The service is currently accessed by 520 people, which highlights just how valuable it is. My Department has previously awarded £120,000 to the Galliagh Community Development Group and I am pleased that we can now provide further funding to help them maintain this essential service."
