Why did this happen?

By Michele Canning Smith

A SIX year old boy looking forward to the arrival of Santa has instead been left traumatised after his mother's home was attacked by thugs last week.

Windows were broken at their home at Glebe Gardens in the Sion Mills area late on Thursday night.

His mum, who does not want to be named, said she just wants to know why her home was attacked. Glass in both the front door and the living room window was shattered.

Around 10.45pm the woman had just finished reading a story with her son in the living room of her home when the windows were smashed.

She told the Chronicle, "We had just finished reading the book and my son was lying on the floor about to start writing his Christmas cards when I heard a bang on the door.

"The next thing the living room window was smashed and the glass flew around my son. I grabbed him immediately, he was absolutely terrified.

"I didn't hear anyone before the windows were broken and I was too afraid to go out after it happened. I really just want to know why my home was targeted and attacked like this.

"They have terrorised myself and my son," said the mother who has lived in the area for the past 35 years.

"I get on well with my neighbours and have a good relationship with them, my mum lives beside me. I don't believe it was young people who carried out this attack.

"Whoever carried this out, they are just scumbags, especially to attack someone's home in the month of Christmas. My child was petrified and I was squealing to such an extent that my mother heard me."

The attack is being investigated by the PSNI.
