Brocagh blitz blows O'Neills away

Eyes on the ball: Roes and Brocagh men chase the ball during this recent match-up at Glenmornan.

Owen Roes ........................0-9

Brocagh ............................1-11

OWEN Roes' hopes of a first ACL win of the season disappeared in a devastating five-minute blitz by Brocagh in Glenmornan on Sunday. Finding themselves three in arrears the Emmetts struck 1-4 without reply to grab a lead that, in the end, they didn't let go.

However, it was the home side that started brightest as Barry Porter knocked over on four minutes. Paul Donnelly, fresh from his Sigerson Cup win, levelled up straight away. Yet the hosts were starting with the bit between their teeth, and a nice move allowed Brendan Boggs to restore the lead.

Midfielder Chris Kelly marched forward to plant a nice score on the quarter hour, and when Mark O'Neill capitalised on slack marking Owen Roes were flying.

Donnelly's accurate free brought things closer, but corner forward Willie Doherty clipped over to restore the home side's lead. However it was about to go badly wrong. Twice in 60 seconds Donnelly scored via a fist and a placed ball. Daniel Campbell won a bouncing ball to level up, and Niall McCloskey put Brocagh in front in the space of a few minutes.

The Emmetts weren't finished though, and a late Brian Kolbhom goal through a crowded goalmouth shattered the home side's resolve.

Marcus McGinley put the Roes on the board early in the second half but Donnelly twice more kept Owen Roes at arm's length. However the Leckpatrick side nearly closed the gap significantly shortly beforehand. The move of the game allowed Kevin O'Donnell to put Barry Porter in. However he was quickly closed down and Brian Catterson made a smart save down low.

A Boggs free and a short free despatched by Sean og Devine kept hopes alive for the Leckpatrick charges. Donnelly's seventh score of the day, a Paul McGorry point and an effort from Niall McCloskey made the game safe, before Kevin O'Neill got a late consolation score.

A hugely disappointing day for Owen Roes who failed to perform after a promising opening 15 minutes. This weekend the team travel to Dregish who are also pointless at this stage, knowing a win is crucial.
