KNOCKAVOE School and Resource will make history shortly, when they take to the stage of the Alley Theatre in their own production of Annie.
Catering for pupils with differing special needs, Knockavoe will be the first school of its type to put on a full scale production within a professional theatre, something never attempted by a special needs school in Northern Ireland before.
One of the greatest children's musicals of the 1980's, Annie tells the story of an orphan who manages to escape the clutches of the evil Mrs Hannigan, after she is adopted by billionaire Daddy Warbucks.
Next month however, the 60 or so pupils of Knockavoe will bring Broadway to the Alley, with their own take on the timeless classic.
Heading the production is teacher Catriona Kerrigan.
Looking forward to opening night, she said: "All of the pupils and staff have been working so hard, rehearsing for weeks, every day and will undoubtedly prove that Knockavoe can perform a show to remember. It is a fantastic opportunity to perform at the Alley Theatre and one which is stirring great excitement around the school."
Taking the lead role of red-haired Annie is 13-year-old Annie, while Knockavoe staff member Adrian Lynch will fill the boots of Daddy Warbucks.
Cast members recently received their costumes in anticipation of their first photo call
The Alley's Nathan Flatman said: "The Alley is delighted to be working with Knockavoe School on their new production, which we cannot wait to see. I have spoken to several of the performers now and was bowled over by their enthusiasm and joy in performing in the Alley. Joseph Kerlin, aged 7, told me 'mum and dad will see me dancing with my braces on the big stage' and his pride in showing off his new found skills to his parents was a joy to see. I urge everyone across the district to come down to the Alley and catch this great show. You won't be disappointed."
Tickets for the show are now on sale at the box office and patrons to the Alley are urged to purchase their tickets early due to heavy demand. For further information please contact the Alley Theatre on 028 7138 4444 or visit www.alley-theatre.com
