Dregish................................0-13
Owen Roes............................0-7
OWEN Roes' poor start to the season continued on Friday evening as they suffered a six-point reverse against Dregish. However the visitors will point to a decimating injury list that left them without almost half of the side that opened the season against Clogher, such as Mark Kelly, Ronan Parker and Kevin Doherty. This coupled with the long-term absence of Declan McCrossan saw the Green and Reds supplement their squad with several young, reserve players.
It was one such player who got the evening off to a bright start for the Leckpatrick side, as Davy Harte got the contest's opening pair of scores. Dregish levelled up soon after, but this could've been short-lived as only some stout defending defied Marcus McGinley from getting a goal effort off.
The hosts pointed once again to take the initiative, and although Brendan Boggs levelled up from a free kick, Dregish converted twice in succession as the half ebbed out. Paul Kelly blocked a goal bound effort as Dregish turned up the heat. Late on Kevin O'Neill's solo allowed Davy Harte to score and end the half 0-4 to 0-5 to Dregish.
With little in it, the opening exchanges of the second half would be critical, and it was the Pearse ogs that started strongest, as three successful placed kicks, and a effort from play took the game away from Owen Roes.
Brendan Boggs raided forward to raise a white flag, but Dregish kept plugging, and pointed twice either side of a Stephen Dooher point.
Gerard McShane entered the fray for his senior club debut with ten minutes to go and McGinley's forward run let Kevin O'Neill in for a score, but it was too little, and despite a late double yellow transgression for a Dregish forward they added two more scores to take the game at ease.
Numerous absentees certainly added to Owen Roes' problems, but take nothing away from Dregish who fully merited their win. Despite the loss, manager Gerard Porter would have been pleased with the effort of some of his youngsters like Marcus McGinley, Ryan Stewart, Cathal Dooher and Davy Harte. His side are back in action on Thursday at home to Castlederg, and he will be hoping that no more injuries are incurred between now and then.
