Mouthpiece is 'Whistling in the dark'

Mouthpiece Theatre Productions are bringing their production of 'A Whistle in the Dark' by Tom Murphy to the Alley Theatre on Saturday, May 10.

Following their overwhelming success in the Playhouse Theatre in Derry and An Grianan Theatre in Letterkenny, the producers are confident that it will be enjoyed just as thoroughly by Strabane theatre-goers.

The hard hitting play stars Strabane actor Edward Flanagan and has so far received stellar reviews. This is Edward's first time performing in front of his home audience and he says that he is really looking forward to the experience.

'A Whistle in the Dark', directed by Keith Hughes, is a blood curdling play, and a violent work, both in word and action.

It is a conventionally structured tragedy that speeds uncontrollably to its inevitable conclusion to leave a profound and lasting effect on the audience.

The play tells the story of the climactic confrontation between Michael, the oldest of the Carney sons, and his fathers and brothers, a brawling, hard-drinking, criminal gang of Irish migrants living and working in Coventry.

Michael (Edward Flanagan) and his English wife Betty (Anne Gallagher) have given lodgings to his three brothers as they establish themselves in the city, but far from showing him gratitude for his generosity, Michael is treated with derision and terrorised in his own home.

Written in the early 1960s, 'A Whistle in the Dark' remains one of the most unrelenting of family dramas. It delivers dramatic punches that is said to be able to lift audiences out of their seats and is a must see for anyone looking for an emotionally powerful performance and a rewarding theatrical experience.

'A blood curdling play, a violent work, both in word and action.'
