Fatal traffic accident stuns local community

By Conor Sharkey

A 62 year-old who lost his life following a collision last Friday night has been described as "a quiet family man" by a member of the local clergy.

Leslie Edgar of Bunderg Road, Douglas Bridge, died after the car he was driving collided with another vehicle close to the Ulster American Folk Park, outside Newtownstewart at around 8.15pm. A woman driving the other vehicle was also injured in the accident, however it is understood her injuries are not life threatening.

The death of Mr Edgar has shocked and saddened the tight knit communities of Douglas Bridge and Ardstraw communities, where he worked for several years within agricultural circles.

Mr Edgar was laid to rest following a service at Douglas Bridge Presbyterian Church on Tuesday.

Speaking to the Strabane Chronicle on Monday, Minister for both Douglas Bridge and Ardstraw parishes, Rev David Reid said Mr Edgar's death was made all the poignant by the fact that it occurred over the festive period.

"Mr Edgar's death can only be described as a terrible tragedy. I have spoken to the family and they are just stunned. They just can't believe it has happened," Rev Reid said.

He continued: "I did know Mr Edgar on a personal level and he always struck me as a quiet family man and someone who would have helped out where he could.

"He will be sorely missed, particularly because the Douglas Bridge community is so close and everyone knows everyone. Mr Edgar worked as handy man on various farms in the area and no doubt his passing will be felt there also.

"It is a sad thing to happen at any time of year, however the fact that this has happened between Christmas and the New Year makes it all the more difficult for the family to cope with," Rev Reid added.

Meanwhile, West Tyrone MLA Allan Bresland added his condolences, saying, "I knew Mr Edgar and had met him from time to time. I also knew the woman involved in the accident who was injured and it has been a traumatic experience for her.

"It is a very sad incident and a great tragedy for the relatives and friends of Mr Edgar. He was well known about Douglas Bridge where he came from. He was a popular man.

"It is sad and especially at this time of year. My sympathies go out to both the deceased's family and the lady who was injured," he said.

Police are continuing their investigation into the crash and have asked witnesses to contact them on 0845 600 8000.
