Championship glory for Strabane ladies

Strabane girls celebrate after the winning Tyrone Ladies Minor County Championship Grade 4 title.

Strabane Sigersons..........4-14

Edendork St Malachy's......2-5

Sigersons minor ladies captured the Tyrone County Championship (Grade 4) with an emphatic victory over Edendork in front of a large crowd at Drumragh on Monday evening.

With both teams appearing to suffer from nerves in the early stages, Sigersons settled quicker.

A number of scores, including a long-range point from Rachel Brennan, saw Strabane stretch into a five points to one lead at the end of the first quarter.

Despite suffering a heavy defeat by Sigersons earlier in the season, Edendork had come here to compete. After dominating possession for a period, the St Malachy's girls were right back in the game after scoring a goal and a point.

Strabane were unsettled at this stage and recorded a number of wides. Lorraine Conwell then scored from two frees while at the other end Edendork missed a penalty which saw Strabane go in at the interval leading by 0-7 to 1-2.

Going into the second-half this game was all to play for. Sigersons opened the scoring with a point from Lorraine Conwell after some fine passing play from Ruth Duddy, Andrea Kelly, and Rachel Brennan.

Then Lauren Gallagher was first to a high ball sent in towards the goal and fisted the ball into the Edendork net.

However, Edendork again responded and scored a goal and two points to reduce the deficit to two points with 15 minutes to play.

Rachel Brennan scored another wonderful point after winning possession in midfield, which was quickly followed up by a score from Lorraine Conwell.

Sigersons were now starting to dominate with Andrea Kelly, Rachel Brennan, Eimear Boyle and Tori McLaughlin controlling the middle of the park. Then Hollie Friel hit the Edendork net with a fine goal to put some breathing space between the sides.

The Strabane girls now knew that the Championship was in sight and continued to pile on the pressure. Lauren Gallagher scored an excellent individual goal after receiving a great pass from Hollie Friel.

Niamh Harley, Lorraine Conwell and Sheree Connolly added points to extend the lead and the game was finally finished as a contest when an Edendork defender fisted the ball into her own goal while under pressure from the Strabane forwards.

Sigersons captain Lorraine Conwell was presented with the Championship trophy after the game and the joyous team and supporters made a noisy return trip back to Strabane and Páirc Mhic Sioghair.

This was undoubtedly a team performance with everyone playing their part in securing victory. The team will now look forward to the League Final to be played in two weeks time.
