FIRE-FIGHTERS have condemned the arson attack on an unoccupied house in Strabane on Thursday, with Strabane District Council Chairperson, Gerard Foley calling it a "mindless act of stupidity".
The fire broke out in a mid-terraced house in Drummond Court at approximately 4am on Thursday morning.
However, due to the quick action of fire-fighters it was prevented from spreading to adjoining properties.
Speaking out after the attack, Terry Morrison, Station Commander of Strabane Fire and Rescue Service said that the people responsible should be ashamed of themselves and be aware of what could have been very fatal consequences.
He said, "The fire had the potential to escalate into something more than what it was. It endangered people in nearby houses but fortunately, this time, no one was hurt. Those who committed the attack must be aware of the consequences of their actions"
There were three seats of fire at the house; one in an outside boiler house, another in a wheely bin which was set alight and pushed against an outside window, and a further attempt was made to set an oil tank on fire.
Gerard Foley said, "This was a mindless act of stupidity. It is no thanks to those who carried out this despicable act that we were not facing a horrific tragedy.
"There was a determined effort to cause an inferno at this house.
"While the house itself may have been empty it would have undoubtedly spread quickly to adjoining homes which were occupied and, given the timing of this arson attack in the early hours, lives were put at serious risk. Those responsible are beneath contempt."
