My connection with orphanages began six years ago when we were in Bulgaria to buy a house; a Bulgarian friend introduced us to the orphans in Elhovo and their plight. Compelled to do something, on our subsequent trips we carried cases containing a few things for the children. In January 2007, having made approximately 12 visits we were slapped with a rather hefty excess baggage charge.
So we decided to buy a van and drive it to Bulgaria. We contacted business associates, family and friends to ask them for basic necessities washing powder, toothpaste, nappies etc. and a small donation of £5 towards the transportation costs.
By doing this and appealing on local radio, we hoped to fill the van in time for last summer. Weren't we in for a shock! Word soon got out and we were inundated.
Unable to find a tardis, we had to send a container instead of the van!
Last summer a 40ft container of clothes and basic essentials, arrived in Elhovo as a result of the generosity of people here. A radio appeal for 60 pairs of curtains again set the phones ringing off the hook. The van left in Sept 2007 filled to the roof including boots, curtains, carpet (kindly donated by Ulster Carpet Mills), as well as the basic necessities.
Also in September we established a small vegetable garden next to Elhovo orphanage, that will not only give the children an interest and basic life skill, but also provide some fresh vegetables.
The root of the problem lies in the extreme poverty in the surrounding villages. With the average worker receiving approx £4 a day, it is impossible for them to feed and clothe their families. So many send their children to the orphanage simply to ensure they eat.
In September 2007, for a mere £220, we took 127 children from that orphanage for burgers and chips. It was their first ever meal out!
We are attempting to tackle the source of the problem by taking supplies to the poorest local families.
Through the generosity and ongoing support of major retailers like Primark and Dunnes, we have taken out boxes of clothes, provided carpet (Ulster Carpet Mills) and much-needed desks and school equipment (thanks to the WELB). On each occasion, I have overseen the safe delivery of the containers to make sure every item goes where most needed.
Although we have accomplished a lot, there is still much to be done. We have now received a request from four institutions in Silven where the situation is dire. For example, one orphanage housing 75 babies (0-3 years). You name it, they don't have it.
So we are appealing for help from anyone who can donate nappies, washing powder, washing-up liquid, disinfectant, cleaning materials, toiletries and dried/tinned food.
