The husband of Attracta Harron has described her killer as 'a psychopath who should never be released to slaughter another innocent woman.'
Those were the words of Michael Harron when he spoke to the Tyrone Herald following the Appeal Court's ruling that Trevor Hamilton should not serve a full life sentence.
Hamilton will not be considered for release for another 31 years and then he would have to convince a parole board he is no longer a danger to society.
He was originally sentenced to remain in prison until his death. However this sentence imposed by Mr Justice McLaughlin following his trial two years ago was quashed on Friday and reduced to a minimum sentence of 35 years.
Mr Harron said, "I can't understand how the judges came to that conclusion. As they went through their summation they totally agreed with everything trial Judge McLaughlin said at sentencing and then all of a sudden they say 35 years. I just can't understand it.
"They were careful to say that does not mean he will get out. I don't think anyone believes that at 56 years of age he is going to be let out loose to slaughter another innocent woman.
"I am not a medical expert but I think he has all the characteristics of a psychopath in that there was no admission of his crime and no admission of regrets.
"I do not know what will happen in over 30 years. I won't be around to see it though some of my family will. I hope by the time the parole board gets going victims are given consideration when these decisions are made."
Mr Harron expressed relief that the legal process appears to be completed.
"I would like to repeat what my son Micheal said in his statement to Judge McLaughlin, 'This horrendous crime will reverberate for generations in our family.
"We are glad this is the end of all the legal procedures and I hope that we can start to reorganise our lives as best we can."
