We're just over half way through the year and it feel's like time to give some of my favourite local acts a shameless plug. So in no particular order, here are four of my favourite tracks recorded in late '07 and 2008.
Seeing that it supposed to be summer despite the weather, it seems fitting to start with a tune that wouldn't go amiss at a barbecue or trip to the beach. David Oliver's debut album 'Gonna Make My Move' provides 10 cracker tunes for your 'soundtrack to summer' CD, none more so than 'It's Beautiful'. Simple but catchy, the wonderfully happy flute is complemented by refreshingly uplifting lyrics. If you happen to see me walking about the town with a large grin on my face, chances are I'm listening to this on my iPod. If you still haven't got your hands on the album drop David himself an email at info@davidoliver.info or at www.myspace.com/davidolivermusic.
Skruff's latest EP 'Naked Us' cemented their status as one of the best acts in Ireland at the minute, winning them an army of fans across the country. "Your Favourite Song" encapsulates everything I love about Skruff and their music. Illustrating exactly what a rhythm section should sound like joined by Skruff's trademark backing vocals, the guitar and main vocals sit back and allow the rest of the band to cut through. Even at this stage you still find yourself knowing the words and singing along after the one listen. You can get a listen online at www.myspace.com/skruffderry where the kind chaps are even allowing you to download a few tracks free of charge.
Bangor outfit Two Door Cinema Club have only recently found their way onto my CD player and they're fasting becoming my first choice as soon as I get into the house. EP opener Cigarette's in the Theatre immediately hits you right where it matters. Quiet verses combined with massive choruses make sure you don't switch off. The EP demonstrates production at its best, and can be ordered online at www.myspace.com/twodoorcinemaclub.
Belfast metal band 'Gacy's Threads' are blessed with the talents of Strabane guitarist Blane Doherty (ex-Merdfoot), and are one of the few local metal acts I've been impressed with. Recent single 'Eunuch' showcases some fine musicianship and the writing I was so looking forward to hearing when Blane and Currie (drums) got together. Very Coverge-esque, the sheer aggression of the track is just a taste of the blood and sweat the lads put into their music. You can check out the track and buy it for a measly quid at www.myspace.com/gacysthreads.
A lot of web research for you this week then, and that's not even 2% of the music you need to be hearing. I've deliberately left one of my favourite local acts 'Tapasia' out as there'll be an EP review coming your way very soon. But you have enough work to do until then...
