Pensioners robbed for just £40

By Conor Sharkey
HEARTLESS thieves who locked a Strabane pensioner in a shed before ransacking his home escaped with just £40. Brazen burglars struck at the Evish Road home of Seamus Dunne (85) and his sister Rose (83) at around 5.30pm on Monday evening. Mr Dunne was working in a shed attached to the house when the burglars bolted the door, locking him in. They then entered the house where Ms Dunne was asleep. After ransacking the living room, they made off with a sum of money, believed to be around £40. After half an...

Cuts to out of hours service

By Conor Sharkey
WESTERN Urgent Care, charged with rolling out the out of hours service in Strabane, has dismissed claims that staff cuts will have major implications for patients. Plans were unveiled on Monday to reduce the number of GPs on-duty in surgeries overnight across the North West from five to three. At present, five GPs provide cover across the North West's five out of hours facilities. Meanwhile, a further five doctors remain on-call over the same period. From July 1 however, only three GPs will be available across the...

Points a must in Inniskeen

By Alan Rodgers
POINTS are the primary aim for Tyrone whose bid to get back on track in Division One of the National League begins with a potentially tricky away trip against Monaghan on Sunday. Nothing less than a victory will be suffice for both counties after defeats in their opening matches last month. It's a pressure-situation certain to generate a powder-keg atmosphere in the intimate surroundings of Inniskeen. Injuries and suspensions have undermined the Red Hands' resources during recent weeks. But there's no doubting their...

Finlay admits both teams are under pressure

IT could well be a make or break encounter for both Tyrone and Monaghan when the sides meet in the tight confines of Inniskeen on Sunday. Even a cursory glance at the line up in Division One will give an indication of how competitive a league it is going to be. It includes the provincial champions from the four provinces as well as the All Ireland champions and while in some cases the emphasis may not be on league success all of the counties are using it as preparation for the championship season that is now just around the corner. Monaghan,...>>> more

The new electric ballroom set to dazzle at the Alley

THE Strabane Drama Festival, the North West's premier drama Festival, is set to welcome a fantastic new production of "The New Electric Ballroom", from the co-writer of international box office hit "Hunger" and performed by the prestigious Butt Drama Circle on March 24th. "The New Electric Ballroom", written by the emerging Irish writer Enda Walsh, involves a trio of women, Breda, Clara and Ada, who live in a decaying house in an Irish port town. Think of Dickens's Miss Havisham, multiply her by two, maybe by three, and you'll get the idea....>>> more

Police raids, poteen and scary rats at the alley

AN Irish wake, filled with head banging poteen, a plague of scary rats and a comic police raid are just some of the scenes to expect when 'Open Stage' treads the boards of the Alley Theatre tonight in Strabane.
