FOLLOWING a number of trailer thefts in the Omagh area in recent weeks local police would like to remind owners of the trailer marking and registration scheme.
The scheme is free of charge to all trailer owners, including livestock, b uilders, car trailers and horseboxes, and police hope that as many people as possible avail of the service.
Inspector Kyle Barton commented, "By stamping your details on your trailer somewhere hidden out of sight it makes it easier for the police to track down and return your stolen property and makes it harder for the thieves to try and explain why the trailer they are towing belongs to them.
"However prevention is better than cure so our advice is to always secure your trailer when not in use. Locking trailers in secure buildings and yards is a good idea, and you could also consider chaining a trailer to an immovable fixture or buying a wheel clamp.
"In rural areas, farmers often get to know each other's trailers and equipment. If you see a familiar trailer being towed by a stranger, alert the owner and call the police."
Anyone who would like further advice is asked to contact the local crime prevention officer on 0845 600 8000.
