Cancer group raises £6,000

NEWTOWNSTEWART and District Local Committee for Cancer Research presented a cheque for £6,000 to Glenda Milligan, community fundraiser for Cancer Research (NI) at the annual presentation supper and dance in the premises of Baronscourt Golf Club on Saturday night.

Mrs Milligan received the cheque from Eddie Donnell, local honorary officer, who thanked everyone for supporting this worthwhile cause. Music was provided by the Silvertones, Sion Mills. During the evening two bottles of spirits were ably auctioned by Desmond Scott, of Scott and Ewing group, and this realised a fantastic sum of £210, with the total draw on the night raising £690.

The money was raised through several events which were organised throughout the year. These included a fancy dress disco in the Rendezvous, Newtownstewart (kindly granted by Carol Hempton). This event was organised by Claire Baxter, Cherry Ewing and Sharon Adams and raised £425. Ardstraw Football Club organised a 5k fun walk organised by Keith Gallagher and Caroline Noble, with refreshments being provided by Carol Hempton. This event raised £1,413. Two bucket collections by Keith Gallagher and Care Bear playschool in the Utopia Night Club, Omagh (courtesy of Scott and Ewing) realised £703. Annie McKelvey of Newtownstewart Presbyterian indoor bowling club donated £31 to the charity, and a further £170 was donated in lieu of flowers. A very successful bodywaxing fun night in the Market Bar, Castlederg, organised by Seamus Logue and Stephanie O'Neill from the Addiction Hair Salon, Sion Mills realised a fantastic sum of £2,000. A further £511 was raised through the charity's collecting boxes which were placed in various commercial premises and homes throughout the district.
