FORAS na Gaeilge has called on schools across Tyrone to prove their 'Grá don Gaeilge'. With the announcement of the second annual 'Gleo' schools scheme, Foras na Gaeilge reminds schools that Irish is not just for the classroom.
'GLEO' recognises the unique environment offered by schools for the promotion of usage of oral Irish from a young age. The scheme, which was first piloted by Foras na Gaeilge last year, aims to celebrate the creative and innovative ways English-medium schools in Tyrone encourage the use of spoken Irish both inside and outside the classroom.
Any English-medium primary or post primary school in Tyrone in which Irish is taught can apply under this scheme. Applications will be especially welcome from schools in disadvantaged areas who make substantial progress throughout the school year in the promotion of Irish.
Speaking about GLEO, Tomás Ó Ruairc, deputy CEO of Foras na Gaeilge explained, "Having worked extensively with schools throughout the Island, we in Foras na Gaeilge are acutely aware of the need to recognise efforts being made by schools to encourage the spoken language. Again, this year we want to highlight the best techniques and approaches being used so that they could be shared with other schools around the country."
The GLEO scheme is a great opportunity for schools to show their Grá don Gaeilge' and get rewarded for it. Successful schools will receive ¤3,000 (£2,000) which is to be divided as follows: ¤1,750/£1,200 to the school for Irish-language resources, ¤1,250/£800 to fund projects or events which promote Irishthroughout the school.
Nominations are assessed by expert judges and shortlisted schools will then be visited. The entry deadline for applications is Friday, November 9.
