McClintock pupils are primed on combatting future climate change

Action Renewables visited McClintock Primary School, Seskinore, Omagh as part of their on-going Northern Ireland-wide educational programme supported by Norfolkline Irish Sea Ferry Services.

This programme, which is linked to the schools' curriculum and is free of charge, aims to teach primary and post-primary school children about the importance of renewable energy in helping combat climate change.

Laura Hilary, Action Renewables, believes education, particularly among the young, who in turn can educate their parents, is vital in turning the tide against increased use of conventional fuels and instead offering the more environmentally-friendly alternatives of renewable energy.

Laura Hilary said, "Young people are the future and so it is crucial that they understand the impact that we are having on our climate.

"Our programme is fun and interactive, providing an excellent opportunity for children of all ages to learn about renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power. It teaches the children about the damage that fossil fuels are doing to our world, which is particularly important, considering here in Northern Ireland, we generate around 95% of our electricity through the burning of such fuels as coal and gas.

"The programme has a dedicated website which can be found at www.wiseuptorenewables.com. Here pupils and teachers can download worksheets, activities, games and lesson plans to ensure they maximize their learning experience."

Mr Dennison, from McClintock Primary School says the Action Renewables Education Programme was a great way to generate increased interest in climate change amongst his pupils and particularly in how they can each help in the fight against global warming.

He said, "The use of the character Renewable Robbie within the PowerPoint presentation was well received by all the children. The children enjoyed the activity and will remember how each of their small contributions will work towards providing a bigger solution for climate change."
