Strule Arts Centre is delighted to welcome local man Carl Cassidy and his wife Valeria to their stage on Friday, September 19 at 8pm. Born in Derry, Carl grew up in Omagh where he took up clarinet and saxophone instruction with his tutor and mentor, the late James O'Neill. Carl performs on the clarinet, piano and saxophone but also composes this own arrangements.
Trained as a classical and jazz musician in London at the Purcell School Royal College of Music Guildhall School and Berklee College (USA), Carl joined the National Youth Orchestra and National Youth Jazz Orchestra playing under Sir Simon Rattle Lutoslawski and Sir Colin Davies. He has played at the Proms; Queen Elizabeth Hall; Blue Note Jazz Club (New York) and Buckingham Palace at royal invitation as well as having played with artists such as M. Rostrapovich D. Leibman, I. Turner, B. Zander and Y. Solomon. Carl has also toured the Caribbean and Britain with his jazz septet/quartet and has been soloist with the Philharmonia and the London Concert Orchestras.
Carl's wife Valeria studied organ at Shostakovich School in Moscow, read music at King's College London and graduated from LCM2 in London where she specialised in contemporary piano performance.
Joining Carl for the first time will be Aiden Dunphy (drums) and Michael McGinty (bass) in a concert which hosts a kaleidoscope of classical and jazz pieces spanning everything from Bach to Verdi and from Oscar Peterson to Freddie Hubbard all featured back-to-back! There'll also be a chance to hear world premieres of Carl's compositions. Carl and Valeria Cassidy's concert is on Friday, September 19 at 8pm.
