In response to M. Duffy's letter (UH, July 10), I agree social workers are not solely to blame for the Lammy disaster. There is quite a list of professionals who should shoulder the blame with them; e.g. GPs, police, mental health services and, of course, close relatives of the deceased couple.
These are the people who had the most damning evidence before them.
The Toner Report revealed that the professionals involved with this family closed the case on Arthur McElhill, who had two previous convictions of sexual assault on two 17-year-old girls. They deemed that his daughter Caroline was at no risk from him.
Prior to the fire and murder of his partner and five children, according to the Toner Report, Arthur McElhill was rated in a high-risk category.
M. Duffy is perfectly correct in saying social workers were not responsible for the tragedy in Lammy, but they let it happen.
