With the summer finally here, there is no better time to get plenty of physical activity. I am writing to let your readers know that as well as all the other health benefits, being physically active can help reduce your risk of cancer. This is why World Cancer Research Fund recommends people aim to be active for at least half-an-hour a day and, as fitness improves, they build up to an hour of moderate physical activity or half-an-hour of vigorous activity.
And the good news is you do not have to go to the gym to be considered active. Moderate activity is anything that gets your heart beating a bit faster and can include walking briskly or doing some types of housework such as sweeping and vacuuming.
But despite strong scientific evidence on this, a recent survey showed that just 43% of people are aware physical activity can reduce cancer risk.
This is why I want to get the message across to people in the local area that being active is something positive they can do for cancer prevention.
If they want to find out more about how physical activity can help prevent cancer, they can download our Moving More publication at www.wcrf-uk.org. We will also send a free copy to the first 100 readers who call 020 7343 4205 and quote the code "media".
