Grant for pregnant women

By Emma Beattie

Expectant mothers here got some good news today, as the Inland Revenue and Customs unveiled a new grant which aims to help women meet some of the costs that can arise in the run up to the birth of their child.

The payment, a one off sum of £190, can be claimed from the 25th week of pregnancy, after women have sought the advice of a health professional. It's good news all round as the grant doesn't depend on household income and won't affect any other benefits. Expectant mothers who apply for the benefit within the first three months of the year will recieve their money in April, which they can spend on anything they choose to give their child the best start in life.
