COUNCILLORS in Omagh have agreed a rates rise of 1.48% overall for the incoming year, the non-domestic rate going up by 2.82%.
The non-domestic rate has now been set at 22.5142 pence in the pound, with the domestic rate at 0.3609 pence in the pound.
The Councillors and officers said that they had given very careful consideration to the estimates for the year ahead so that a correct balance is achieved between keeping the increase to the rates at an absolute minimum and either reduce running costs or maintain them at existing levels.
Speaking after the Council meeting, Omagh District Council Chairman, Councillor Patrick McGowan MBE, acknowledged the financial burden of the rates bill on householders, particularly in the current difficult economic climate.
He added that residents of the district can be assured that Council finances are managed in a considered, careful and transparent manner.
"The Council has robust planning and monitoring arrangements in place to ensure that its finances are properly managed and that capital projects are carried out within budget," he said.
"Like all local authorities, Omagh District Council is subject to stringent levels of financial scrutiny through rigorous internal audit systems, as well as independent examination by the Local Government Auditor" he added.
