Dunbreen hit six of the best

Colm Spracklin sells his marker a dummy as Dunbreen Rovers won the Irish Junior Cup game against Carryduff.Jmac-17

DUNBREEN ROVERS ........................6

CARRYDUFF .................................2

DEEP-LYING striker, Colm Spracklen's hat-trick claimed the match ball after this six-hit at the New Showgrounds, but it was the splendid Patrick Nugent's one-minute double early in the second half that sparked Dunbreen's passage into the third round.

Spracklen gave Rovers a tonic start, collecting Ryan Sharkey's throw-in and shooting past teenage keeper, David Kirk in just 30 seconds, but the home side then proceeded to scorn a series of clear-cut first-half opportunities including a penalty and, after bossing the best part of the opening period, had only the hitman's lone goal to mark their supremacy.

Nugent's quick-fire double though changed the complexion of the tie. On 51 minutes, from Mitchell's assist, the Dunbreen captain headed over Kirk's head from the edge of the box and he followed up with a venomous left-foot drive that beat the young keeper on his near upright as McEnhill sent him scampering clear in the inside left channel.

Williamson should have thrown his side a lifeline from the spot (54) when McLaren clashed with Gerry Flynn, but the keeper made amends, diving full length to his right to keep out the midfielder's penalty.

It became 4-0 on the hour, substitute, Patrick Northern's persistence winning the ball and Spracklen crafting it into an unguarded net from wide on the right when Kirk raced off his line in a vain bid to foil the pair.

Rovers soon broke four against two with Northern again the architect, but this time Kirk came up trumps and Flynn rewarded his keeper by cutting the deficit with a far-post header from substitute Martin Cunningham's right-sided cross.

Northern finally got on the scoresheet 16 minutes from time swooping on Kirk's miskick and five minutes later Spracklen wrapped up the six-hit, sealing his hat-trick in the process and throwing a unique somersault to celebrate. Visiting substitute, Jonathan Woods completed the scoring (84) with McLaren on walkabout.

McCullagh settles it for Tummery

TUMMERY ATHLETIC..........................4

RANDALSTOWN................................3

AFTER EXTRA-TIME

OVER the years Tummery Athletic have built up quite a reputation as one of the best cup sides in the Fermanagh and Western League. On Saturday the Dromore outfit called on and needed all their experience as Gerard McCullagh struck a late goal to force extra-time before the central midfielder pounced to score the winner with the dreaded penalty shootout looming.

With a number of recognised club defenders unavailable for selection, McCullagh started the game at the heart of the home rearguard but when Athletic fell 3-2 behind with 15 minutes remaining Stephen McCullagh handed his younger brother a more attacking role, a move that in the end proved a real masterstroke by the player-manager.

Johnny Winser got the ball rolling with a thumping 20-yard volley which flew past the visiting goalkeeper's right hand but two quick goals around the hour mark saw Randalstown seize the initiative.

At any level experience is an irreplaceable quality and moments later veteran striker Stephen McCullagh was in the right place at the right time to head in McCann's right corner kick at the back post.

The Ballymena Morning League side hit back almost instantly to make it 3-2 with 15 minutes remaining before McCullagh junior took a firm grip on proceedings.

As the clock ticked down, the central attacker burst forward to get his head on the end of another McCann delivery from the right before the man who lifted the Mulhern Cup in 2006 pounced to score the decisive goal.

With just two minutes of extra-time remaining, Stephen McCullagh and Campbell teed-up McCann whose flashing drive proved too hot to handle for the visiting custodian and Gerard McCullagh followed up to volley home.

Oguz on target

ALBION STARS......................................0

OMAGH UNITED....................................1

A SUPERBLY-CRAFTED and well-executed goal by Peter Oguz settled this tie at the YMCA Grounds at Knightsbridge, Belfast although had the United players brought along their shooting boots they could have disappeared over the horizon at the halfway point.

The visitors squandered a host of gilt-edged chances in a one-sided first 45 minutes, most notably when a thumping volley by Benny Mitchell crashed back off the crossbar down on the goal line and away to safety.

On 26 minutes Oguz grabbed the decisive goal. A sweeping moved instigated by sweeper Marty Flanagan ended up with Oguz, who cut inside onto his left foot to thunder the ball high to the far corner of the net.

Omagh continued to carve out chance after chance although Albion made a fist of things on the resumption of the second half.

Apart from one smart near-post save, United goalkeeper Dermot McKeogh wasn't troubled throughout and in a final flourish the visitors should have added to their tally.

Oguz failed to beat the home netminder when through one-on-one, Liam McPeake was equally culpable while Conor McCullagh charged in from the right only to blaze over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.

Browne inspires Clabby Strollers

CLABBY STROLLERS.............................4

KILREA UNITED....................................3

A DEREK Browne-inspired Clabby Strollers came from behind three times to emerge victorious from this seven-goal thriller at the King George V Playing Fields.

Browne, the best player by a country mile, was the main architect for the Strollers and it was fitting that the midfielder should win the tie with a sublime curling free kick five minutes from time.

United twice went ahead in the first half but a toe-poke from Raymond Carroll and an expert finish to a Davy Little cross by Browne left it all square at the half-time interval.

On the resumption of the second half an industrious visiting side again edged ahead, thereafter the Strollers took a firm grip on proceedings with Ricky Carroll swooping to tap home following a corner kick by who else but that man Browne.

Then came the crowning moment. With the clock ticking towards the 90-minute mark Clabby were awarded a free kick and Browne stepped up to curl the ball expertly over the wall to the goalkeeper's top right hand corner.

Afirst for Rutledge

GLASTON..............................................3

OMAGH HOPSITALS..............................4

(AET)

CENTRE-back Darren Rutledge scored his first ever goal for Omagh Hospitals as the Fermanagh and Western League side recovered from two goals down to win this competitive cup-tie at Twinbrook.

Hospitals trailed 2-0 at half-time but, after Mickey Coyle and Derryl McQuade both went close, the impressive Damien Meenan threw the Omagh side a precious lifeline by heading home a Coyle free kick.

Then with 10 minutes remaining Meenan flicked on a corner kick and McQuade blasted home to force the tie into extra-time.

By now the momentum was firmly with the Hospitals and in the first period of over-time Brendan Morrison's side produced some sparkling football, none better than a mesmerising run by Ryan Timlin which almost unlocked the home defence.

It was a warning shot that Glaston ignored at their peril and moments later Rutledge smashed a left footed volley to the net from another Meenan knock down before a looping header from Coyle sealed the win.

Glaston, who had seven players booked - an indication of their physical approach - added their third in the dying seconds.

Few positives for Killen Rangers

CLEARY CELTIC......................................5

KILLEN RANGERS..................................1

RANGERS' cup campaign is over before it started as Allister Sproule's side wilted in the second half at Jennings Park, Newry.

Celtic raced into a two-goal lead but a cracking 20-yard strike by one of two teenage debutants, Adam Buchanan, gave the Hawks hope on the stroke of half-time.

That hope quickly turned to despair as Cleary exposed shortcomings in the visiting defence to comprehensively secure their passage to the next round.

On a positive note the second round tie marked the full debuts of Milk Cup players, Buchanan and Scott Sproule.
