College launches foundation degree in early years studies

Thu, Jul 19, 2007

THE new South West College Omagh Campus will be offering a Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies from this coming September.

This is the first time that this nationally recognised qualification will be offered in the North and will provide students with the opportunity to develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of early years and related issues, enabling them to become confident and competent well qualified early years practitioners. The course has been developed over the past two years by a group of Northern Ireland Further Education Colleges and in partnership with Stranmillis University College.

The foundation degree covers many elements of child development and education throughout its 12 modules including: Child protection, special educational needs, language and communication, learning through play and managing behaviour.

The launch of the Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies took place today, Wednesday May 30 in the Binnian Room, Stranmillis University College, Belfast. Special guests included Professor Richard McMinn, Principal of Stranmillis University College and Mr Pat Morrison from DEL.
