In parts of Omagh, flags have been flying from lamp-posts along some of our main thoroughfares throughout the month of July. There are Northern Ireland flags, Union Jacks, Scottish Saltires and others, and almost without exception, they are flying at half-staff.
While not an expert in flag etiquette, I do know that flying a flag at half-mast (or half-staff) is a public signal of mourning or distress. Could whoever is responsible for putting up these flags please explain to the rest of us what exactly has caused their mourning or distress?
Also, could they tell us when they will come down? Going on previous years, my guess is they'll probably stay up there until they rot.
