I AM writing to your newspaper to highlight a planning proposal for a gravel pit in the Mullaslin/Bracky area. The proposal, if granted will have serious ramifications for the local community and its heritage, as well as impacting on wildlife such as badgers, foxes, hares, stoats and buzzards. Tourism will also suffer as the proposed site is near to an ancient fort listed in the Omagh District Council website, as well as tourism NI.
Perhaps the most negative aspect of this proposal is the detrimental effect it will have on the quality of life for those families in the district who live in an area free from heavy machinery and lorries needed to service a quarry.
As far as I am aware no councillors have commented on the proposal. I would ask that designated councillors from each party take up this issue as a matter of urgency and lobby against it as it has implications for the integrity of the area, as well as contacting local ratepayers outlining how their party's policy on the environment can ensure the area remains unmolested.
