CAUH-Derg school marks 50 years

ASSEMBLED guests at the tree planting ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary at Castlederg High School Past and present pupils and staff of Castlederg High School have planted a tree to mark the school's 50th anniversary.

The tree planting marked the start of a series of events which have been planned throughout the school year to celebrate the opening of the school in September 1958.

Some of the first pupils and staff from 1958 joined with the present Year 8 students and Principal to plant an Irish oak tree in the school grounds.

The Year 8 students were Victoria Catterson and Bryn Stevenson.

The original pupils and staff (from left) are Mr Jim Emery, Mr Joe McDonald former teacher, Mr Herbie Young, Mr Desy Williamson present Principal, Mrs Jean Young (nee Elliott) and Mrs Flora Magee(nee Burke).Speaking about the event school principal Mr Desy Williamson said: 'This is the start of a momentous year for us. Castlederg High School has played an important role in the life of so many people over the last 50 years and made a very significant contribution to our local community. We would like as many former pupils as possible to take the opportunity and to participate and support these events."

One of our first priorities is to compile a short history of the school. You can be a part of this by contributing personal, interesting and/or amusing memories of your time with us. We are also hoping to compile a photographic archive so if you would like to help us with either or both it would be much appreciated.

A series of events which will recognise and commemorate many of our achievements have also been organised. If you would like to contribute articles, photographs or simply like to be kept informed, drop us a line to the address below or e-mail us at www.castlederghs.co.uk with your details and/or e-mail address and we will be in contact.

Mr Williamson concluded "It is hoped that our celebratory year will be successful and will recall both fond and poignant memories. We look forward to hearing from you."
